The Spirit Leads On
The previous chapter recorded the sad rift between Paul and Barnabas. But God is good; in this chapter Paul meets Timothy - who would later be the greatest blessing and encouragement to him. Paul and Timothy together display the very opposite of a Pharisaic spirit, setting aside their right to freedom from Jewish ceremonial laws and becoming a servant to the Jews in order to win them to Christ.
Led by the Spirit, Paul, Silas and Timothy find some doors opening to them and others closing against them. As a result, we have here the record of the gospel first reaching Europe; in fact, Britain is what she is because the gospel came here. The ultimate sacrifice made by those who died for this land in the last world war enabled the Christian gospel to continue in this land.
